यश्चैष नानाविधघोररूपैर्व्याघ्रोष्ट्रनागेन्द्रमृगाश्ववक्त्रैः ।
भूतैर्वृतो भाति विवृत्तनेत्रैः सो ऽसौ सुराणामपि दर्पहन्ता ॥६-५९-२३॥
yaścaiṣa nānāvidhaghorarūpairvyāghroṣṭranāgendramṛgāśvavaktraiḥ |
bhūtairvṛto bhāti vivṛttanatraiḥ so'sau surāṇāmapi darpahantā ॥6-59-23॥
Translation
And he who shines, surrounded by spirits of various terrible forms with faces like tigers, camels, elephants, deer, and horses, and with rolling eyes—he is the destroyer of the pride of even the gods.
हिंदी अनुवाद
और यह जो बाघ, ऊँट, हाथी, मृग और घोड़े के समान मुख वाले, फटी हुई आँखों वाले तथा नाना प्रकार के घोर रूप वाले भूतों से घिरा हुआ सुशोभित हो रहा है, वह देवताओं का भी दर्प (घमंड) चूर करने वाला है।
English Commentary
This sets the stage for the description of Ravana himself (or his elite guards). The description of attendants with animal faces highlights the supernatural and grotesque nature of the Rakshasa army. 'Destroyer of the pride of gods' is a classic epithet for Ravana.

यहाँ रावण के साक्षात् वर्णन की भूमिका बांधी जा रही है (या किसी अन्य विशिष्ट सेनापति की, संदर्भानुसार यह रावण के अंगरक्षकों या स्वयं रावण की ओर संकेत हो सकता है, लेकिन अगले श्लोकों से स्पष्ट है कि यह रावण का परिचय शुरू हो रहा है)। 'सुराणामपि दर्पहन्ता' रावण के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है जिसने देवताओं को हराया था।
