Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अभिवृष्टः शरौघेण मेघेनेव महाचलः ।
ह्रस्वं कृत्वा तदा रूपं ध्वजाग्रे निपपात ह ॥६-५९-७९॥
pāvakasyātmajaḥ śrīmān nīlo haricamūpatiḥ |
pitṛtejaḥ prabhāvajño dhvajāgre niṣasāda ha ॥6-59-79॥
Translation
The glorious son of the Fire God (Pavaka), Nila, the commander of the monkey army, knowing the power and glory of his father, sat upon the top of the flag-staff.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अग्निदेव के पुत्र, श्रीमान वानर सेनापति नील, अपने पिता (अग्नि) के तेज और प्रभाव को जानते थे, इसलिए वे ध्वजा के शिखर पर जा बैठे।
English Commentary
This verse reminds us of Nila's divine lineage as the son of Agni (Pavaka). Being aware of his 'pitru-teja' (father's radiance/power), he possesses an innate confidence and perhaps agility that allows him to pull off such daring feats. Sitting on the flagstaff is not just hiding; it's a statement of dominance, perchng atop the symbol of Ravana's pride.

नील अग्निदेव के अंश हैं। 'पितृतेजः प्रभावज्ञो' का अर्थ है कि वे जानते थे कि अग्नि के पुत्र होने के नाते उन पर कुछ विशेष कृपा है या रावण के कुछ अस्त्र (जो अग्नि प्रधान हो सकते हैं) उन पर कम प्रभाव डालेंगे। ध्वजा पर बैठना एक रणनीतिक चाल थी। उन्होंने अपने दैवीय मूल का लाभ उठाते हुए रावण को चकित कर दिया।
