Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावणो ऽपि महातेजाः कपिलाघवविस्मितः ।
अस्त्रमाहारयामास दीप्तमाग्नेयमद्भुतम् ॥६-५९-८२॥
astraṃ ca paramāgneyaṃ so'yojayata rāvaṇaḥ |
nīlaṃ prati mahātejāḥ kapi lāghavavismitaḥ ॥6-59-82॥
Translation
Amazed by the monkey's agility, the highly radiant Ravana deployed the supreme Agneyastra (Weapon of Fire) against Nila.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वानर की फुर्ती से विस्मित महातेजस्वी रावण ने नील के प्रति परम आग्नेयास्त्र का संधान किया।
English Commentary
Unable to target the elusive Nila with conventional arrows, Ravana resorts to magic. He invokes the 'Agneyastra' (Fire Weapon). Ravana's amazement ('vismita') acknowledges Nila's skill. Choosing a fire weapon against the son of Fire might seem counter-intuitive, or perhaps Ravana intended to overpower Nila's elemental affinity with a superior celestial fire.

शारीरिक बल से पार न पाकर रावण दिव्यास्त्रों की ओर मुड़ा। उसने 'आग्नेयास्त्र' चुना। यह विडंबना और रावण की क्रूरता दोनों है, क्योंकि नील अग्निपुत्र हैं। रावण नील की चपलता से 'विस्मित' (हैरान) था, इसलिए उसने एक ऐसा अस्त्र चुना जो व्यापक क्षेत्र को जला सके और जिससे बचना गति से संभव न हो।
