Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्माद् वै रोचये मन्त्रम् रामम् प्रति महाबलाः ।
त्रिविधाः पुरुषा लोके उत्तम अधम मध्यमाः ॥६-६-६॥
tasmādvai rocaye mantraṃ rāmaṃ prati mahābalāḥ । trividhāḥ puruṣā loke uttamādhamamadhyamāḥ ॥6-6-6॥
Translation
'Therefore, O mighty ones, I desire counsel regarding Shri Rama. There are three types of men in the world: the best, the worst, and the mediocre.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'हे महाबली राक्षसो! इसलिए मैं श्री राम के विषय में मंत्रणा (सलाह) करना चाहता हूँ। संसार में उत्तम, अधम और मध्यम—ये तीन प्रकार के पुरुष होते हैं।'
English Commentary
Ravana initiates a theoretical discourse on statecraft before discussing practicals. He categorizes human beings into three types: Uttama (Best), Madhyama (Mediocre), and Adhama (Lowest). This serves as a benchmark for his ministers, challenging them to prove which category they fall into through their advice.

रावण अपने मंत्रियों के सामने 'पुरुषार्थ' और 'मंत्रणा' का वर्गीकरण प्रस्तुत करता है। यह एक प्रबंधन (Management) का पाठ है। वह श्री राम का नाम लेकर चर्चा को केंद्रित करता है। वह मंत्रियों को 'महाबलाः' कहकर उनका उत्साह बढ़ाता है। रावण अब पुरुषों की तीन श्रेणियों की परिभाषा देगा।
