स्वयं रक्षोधिपश्चापि पौलस्त्यो देवकण्टकः ।
मृतेति संयुगे मुक्तो रामेणादित्यतेजसा ॥६-६०-७७॥
svayaṃ rakṣodhipaścāpi paulastyo devakaṇṭakaḥ |
mṛteti saṃyuge mukto rāmeṇādityatejasā ॥6-60-77॥
Translation
Even the Lord of Rakshasas himself, the descendant of Pulastya and the thorn in the side of the gods, was released in battle by the sun-resplendent Shri Rama, considering him as good as dead (or defeated).

स्वयं राक्षसराज पुलस्त्यवंशी रावण, जो देवताओं के लिए कंटक (शूल) समान हैं, उन्हें भी सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी श्री राम ने युद्ध में 'यह मर गया' (या 'यह मरने योग्य हो गया') समझकर छोड़ दिया।
English Commentary
The ultimate humiliation of Ravana is revealed. That the invincible King was defeated and spared ('mukto') by Shri Rama is the strongest indicator of Shri Rama's superiority. Shri Rama is compared to the sun ('Aditya-tejasa'), implying his unbearable radiance. Revealing this defeat is crucial to motivate Kumbhakarna to fight immediately to restore the family honor.

यह सबसे कड़वा सच है। रावण, जो 'देवकंटक' (देवताओं को पीड़ा देने वाला) है, उसे भी श्री राम ने हरा दिया। श्री राम को 'आदित्यतेजसा' (सूर्य समान तेजस्वी) कहा गया है। रावण का जीवनदान पाना उसके लिए मृत्यु से भी बड़ा अपमान था। यूपाक्ष यह बताकर कुम्भकर्ण के क्रोध और भ्रातृ-प्रेम को जगाना चाहता है।
