एतेन जातमात्रेण क्षुधार्तेन महात्मना ।
भक्षितानि सहस्राणि सत्त्वानां सुबहून्यपि ॥६-६१-१३॥
etena jātamātreṇa kṣudhārtena mahātmanā |
bhakṣitāni sahasrāṇi sattvānāṃ subahūnyapi ॥6-61-13॥
Translation
As soon as he was born, this great-bodied one, afflicted by hunger, devoured many thousands of living beings.

जन्म लेते ही भूख से व्याकुल इस विशालकाय राक्षस ने हजारों प्राणियों को अपना ग्रास बना लिया था।
English Commentary
Kumbhakarna's hunger is the fundamental basis of his destructive character. Consuming thousands of beings right at birth reveals his uncontrollable nature. Here, the word 'Mahatmana' refers to the vastness of his physical form. This verse presents the origin story of the terror he spread through creation from his very first moments.

कुम्भकर्ण की भूख उसके विनाशकारी चरित्र का मूल आधार है। जन्म के समय ही हजारों प्राणियों का भक्षण करना उसके अनियंत्रित स्वभाव को प्रकट करता है। यहाँ 'महात्मना' शब्द का प्रयोग उसके विशाल शरीर के संदर्भ में है। यह श्लोक उसके आतंक की आरम्भिक कथा प्रस्तुत करता है, जिसने सृष्टि में भय का संचार किया था।
