Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ध्रुवं लोकविनाशाय पौलस्त्येनासि निर्मितः ।
तस्मात्त्वमद्यप्रभृति मृतकल्पः शयिष्यसे ॥६-६१-२४॥
dhruvaṃ lokavināśāya paulastyenāsi nirmitaḥ |
tasmāttvamadyaprabhṛti mṛtakalpaḥ śayiṣyase ॥6-61-24॥
Translation
Surely you have been created by the son of Pulastya (Ravana/Vishrava) for the destruction of the worlds. Therefore, from this day forth, you shall lie sleeping like one who is dead.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चित ही विश्रवा के पुत्र (रावण) ने तुम्हें लोकों के विनाश के लिए ही उत्पन्न किया है। इसलिए तुम आज से ही मृत के समान सोये रहोगे।
English Commentary
Brahma's curse was the only means to control Kumbhakarna’s power. Identifying him as created for 'lokavinashaya' (world-destruction) proves that his very existence was contrary to Dharma. The curse of sleep was bestowed to prevent him from active carnage. This curse was, in reality, intended to serve as a protective shield for creation.

ब्रह्मा जी का यह शाप कुम्भकर्ण की शक्ति को नियंत्रित करने का एकमात्र उपाय था। 'लोकविनाशाय' कहना यह सिद्ध करता है कि उसका अस्तित्व ही धर्म के विरुद्ध था। निद्रा का शाप उसे सक्रिय संहार से रोकने के लिए दिया गया था। यह शाप वास्तव में सृष्टि के लिए एक रक्षा कवच के रूप में कार्य करने वाला था।
