स्थानं वृद्धिं च हानिं च देशकालविभागवित् ।
आत्मनश्च परेषां च बुध्यते राक्षसर्षभः ॥६-६४-४॥
sthānaṃ vṛddhiṃ ca hāniṃ ca deśakālavibhāgavit |
ātmanaśca pareṣāṃ ca budhyate rākṣasarṣabhaḥ ॥6-64-4॥
Translation
The foremost among Rakshasas, King Ravana, understands the divisions of place and time; he fully comprehends the stability, progress, and decline of both himself and his enemies.

राक्षसों में श्रेष्ठ राजा रावण देश और काल के विभाग को जानते हैं; वे अपनी और शत्रुओं की स्थिति, उन्नति और हानि को भली-भाँति समझते हैं।
English Commentary
Mahodara extols Ravana's supposed mastery of strategic variables like time, place, and the state of the enemy. He frames Ravana's actions as calculated moves rather than impulsive sins. This is a classic example of a courtier justifying the leader's vices by labeling them as 'strategic depth,' even when the kingdom is on the brink of ruin.

महोदर यहाँ रावण की कूटनीतिक कुशलता का गुणगान कर रहा है। वह रावण को 'देशकालविभागवित्' बताकर यह सिद्ध करना चाहता है कि माता सीता का हरण कोई भूल नहीं बल्कि एक सोची-समझी योजना थी। यद्यपि यह सत्य के विपरीत है, किन्तु एक चाटुकार मन्त्री का धर्म ही अपने स्वामी के दोषों को गुणों के रूप में प्रस्तुत करना होता है।
