Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न वेद्मि संयुगे शक्तान् स्वान् परान् वा निशाचर ।
रक्षणीयोऽसि मे वत्स सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६-६७-१५२॥
na vedmi saṃyuge śaktān svān parān vā niśācara |
rakṣaṇīyo'si me vatsa satyametadbra vīmi te ॥6-67-152॥
Translation
O night-stalker! In this combat, I cannot distinguish between my own people and the enemies. O child! You are worthy of being protected by me; I tell you this as the truth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे निशाचर! युद्ध में मैं अपने और पराए के बीच भेद नहीं कर पा रहा हूँ। हे वत्स! तुम मेरे द्वारा रक्षा किए जाने योग्य हो, यह मैं तुमसे सत्य कह रहा हूँ।
English Commentary
Kumbhakarna addresses Vibhishana as 'Vatsa' (child/dear one), expressing fatherly affection. He explains his predicament—that in the heat of battle, he might strike anyone. Protecting Vibhishana is his familial duty, which he fulfills by urging him to withdraw. This dialogue provides a touching glimpse of the family bonds that existed even among the Rakshasas.
