राजन् स कालसङ्काशः संयुक्तः कालकर्मणा ।
विद्राव्य वानरीं सेनां भक्षयित्वा च वानरान् ॥६-६८-२॥
rājan sa kālasaṅkāśaḥ saṃyuktaḥ kālakarmaṇā |
vidrāvya vānarīṃ senāṃ bhakṣayitvā ca vānarān ॥6-68-2॥
Translation
(They said) O King! He (Kumbhakarna), who looked like Time (Death) itself, has been united with the operation of Time (death). Having routed the monkey army and devoured the monkeys...
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उन्होंने कहा) हे राजन! साक्षात् काल (मृत्यु) के समान प्रतीत होने वाले वे (कुम्भकर्ण), काल के कर्म (मृत्यु) को प्राप्त हो गए हैं। उन्होंने वानर सेना को खदेड़ दिया था और वानरों को भक्षण भी कर लिया था।
English Commentary
The messengers frame the report by first highlighting Kumbhakarna's valor. He is described as resembling 'Kala' (Time/Death), yet he himself succumbed to the 'Kala-karmana' (the act of Time/Destiny). This highlights the philosophical truth that even the mightiest are subject to the laws of mortality. They emphasize that he went down fighting, having routed and devoured the enemy, ensuring his death was worthy of a warrior.

दूतों ने कुम्भकर्ण की वीरता का वर्णन करते हुए समाचार दिया। उन्होंने उसे 'कालसङ्काशः' (मृत्यु के समान) कहा, किन्तु विडंबना यह है कि वह स्वयं 'कालकर्मणा' (मृत्यु के नियम) का शिकार हो गया। यह नश्वरता का बोध कराता है—जो दूसरों के लिए काल था, वह भी काल से नहीं बच सका। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि मरने से पहले उसने शत्रु को भारी क्षति पहुँचाई थी, ताकि रावण को अपने भाई के पराक्रम पर गर्व हो।
