Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न हि भ्रातॄन् समुत्सृज्य क्षणं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।
देवा हि मां हसिष्यन्ति दृष्ट्वा पूर्वापकारिणम् ॥६-६८-२०॥
na hi bhrātṝn samutsṛjya kṣaṇaṃ jīvitumutsahe |
devā hi māṃ hasiṣyanti dṛṣṭvā pūrvāpakāriṇam ॥6-68-20॥
Translation
I do not wish to live even for a moment having lost/abandoned my brothers. The gods will indeed laugh at me, seeing me, who has wronged them in the past.
हिंदी अनुवाद
भाइयों को छोड़कर मैं एक क्षण भी जीवित रहने का उत्साह नहीं रखता। मुझे पूर्व में अपकार करने वाला देखकर देवता निश्चय ही मुझ पर हँसेंगे।
English Commentary
Shame is a powerful motivator. Ravana dreads the mockery of the gods ('deva hasishyanti') whom he once terrorized. The loss of his brothers leaves him vulnerable to this ridicule. He feels that living without them, in defeat, is an indignity he cannot bear.
हिंदी टीका
रावण को अपनी प्रतिष्ठा की चिंता सता रही है। उसने देवताओं का बहुत अपमान किया था ('पूर्वापकारिणम्')। अब यदि वह हारा हुआ और अकेला जिया, तो देवता उसका उपहास करेंगे। अपमान का यह भय उसे मृत्यु को गले लगाने के लिए प्रेरित कर रहा है।
