Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तान् सर्वान् समादिश्य रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
मन्युशल्यं वहन् दीनः प्रविवेश स्वमालयम् ॥६-७२-१८॥
sa tān sarvān samādiśya rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ |
manyuśalyaṃ vahan dīnaḥ praviveśa svamālayam ॥6-72-18॥
Translation
Having thus commanded them all, Ravana, the king of Rakshasas, carrying the thorn of grief and anger in his heart, entered his palace in a dejected state.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन सबको इस प्रकार आदेश देकर, राक्षसाधिपति रावण अपने हृदय में शोक और क्रोध रूपी कांटा (शल्य) लिए हुए दीन भाव से अपने महल में प्रविष्ट हुआ।
English Commentary
Ravana becoming 'Dina' (wretched/helpless) marks the psychological peak of his decline. The 'Manyu-shalya' (thorn of grief and wrath) is internally piercing his heart. While he projects authority externally, he is broken within. The sorrow of losing his sons and heroes now outweighs his pride. Despite being the King of Lanka, he enters his own palace today like a defeated man.

रावण का 'दीन' (असहाय/दुखी) होना उसके पतन की मानसिक पराकाष्ठा है। 'मन्यु-शल्य' (क्रोध और शोक का कांटा) उसके हृदय को भीतर ही भीतर छलनी कर रहा है। वह बाहर से आदेश तो दे रहा है, किन्तु भीतर से वह टूट चुका है। अपने प्रिय पुत्रों और वीरों को खोने का दुःख अब उसके अहंकार पर भारी पड़ रहा है। वह लंका का राजा होकर भी आज अपने ही महल में एक पराजित व्यक्ति की तरह प्रवेश कर रहा है।
