Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शीधुपानचलाक्षाणां मदविह्वलगामिनाम् ।
कान्तालम्बितवस्त्राणां शत्रुसञ्जातमन्युनाम् ॥६-७५-१५॥
śīdhupānacalākṣāṇāṃ madavihvalagāminām |
kāntālambitavastrāṇāṃ śatru sañjātaman yunām ॥6-75-15॥
Translation
The Rakshasas whose eyes were rolling from drinking liquor, who were staggering with intoxication, who were clutching the garments of their wives, and who were filled with rage against the enemy (had their palaces burned).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मदिरापान के कारण चंचल आँखों वाले, नशे में लड़खड़ाकर चलने वाले, अपनी पत्नियों के वस्त्र पकड़े हुए और शत्रुओं के प्रति क्रोध से भरे हुए राक्षसों के (महल जल रहे थे)।
English Commentary
This verse provides a graphic depiction of the chaos within Lanka and the demonic character. Their intoxication and rolling eyes are evidence of lost discernment. Even in crisis, they could not free themselves from sensual cravings. Their rage ('Manyu') against the enemy was now merely a symbol of desperation, as they were no longer in a position to effectively retaliate.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक लंका के भीतर की तात्कालिक अव्यवस्था और राक्षसी चरित्र का वीभत्स चित्रण है। मदिरापान और नशे में धुत होना उनके विवेकहीन होने का प्रमाण है। संकट के समय भी वे अपने इंद्रिय-सुखों (कांता) से मुक्त नहीं हो पा रहे थे। शत्रु के प्रति उनका क्रोध (मन्यु) अब केवल हताशा का प्रतीक था, क्योंकि वे प्रतिकार करने की स्थिति में नहीं थे।
