Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शूरमानी खरात्मजः ।
बाढमित्यब्रवीद्धृष्टो मकाराक्षो निशाचरः ॥६-७८-४॥
rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā śūramānī kharātmajaḥ |
bāḍhamityabravīddhṛṣṭo makārākṣo niśācaraḥ ॥6-78-4॥
Translation
Hearing Ravana's words, the night-roamer Makaraksha, the son of Khara, who considered himself a hero, happily said, 'So be it.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण के वचन सुनकर, स्वयं को शूरवीर मानने वाले खर के पुत्र निशाचर मकराक्ष ने प्रसन्न होकर कहा—'बहुत अच्छा (ऐसा ही होगा)'।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the term shuramani for Makaraksha, implying one who is arrogant and thinks highly of his own heroism. Instead of being cautious about facing the warrior who killed his father, he is 'delighted' (hrishta) to receive the order. His response 'Baadham' (So be it) reflects a blind confidence and eagerness for battle, characteristic of the tamasic nature of the demons who underestimate divine power.

इस श्लोक में वाल्मीकि जी ने मकराक्ष के लिए 'शूरमानी' विशेषण का प्रयोग किया है, जिसका अर्थ है 'जो स्वयं को बड़ा वीर मानता हो' (भले ही वास्तविकता कुछ और हो)। यह उसके अहंकार को दर्शाता है। वह युद्ध के परिणाम या श्री राम के पराक्रम पर विचार किए बिना, रावण की आज्ञा पाकर 'हृष्ट' (प्रसन्न) हो गया, जो उसके आसन्न विनाश का संकेत है।
