Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भित्त्वा शरै रथं रामो रथाश्वान् समपातयत् ।
विरथो वसुधां तिष्ठन् मकराक्षो निशाचरः ॥६-७९-३८॥
bhittvā śarai rathaṃ rāmo rathāśvān samapātayat |
viratho vasudhāṃ tiṣṭhan makarākṣo niśācaraḥ ॥6-79-38॥
Translation
Shri Rama shattered the chariot with His arrows and struck down the chariot-horses. Deprived of his chariot, the night-stalker Makaraksha stood upon the ground.
हिंदी अनुवाद
श्री राम ने बाणों से रथ को तोड़ डाला और रथ के घोड़ों को भी धराशायी कर दिया। रथविहीन होकर वह निशाचर मकराक्ष पृथ्वी पर खड़ा हो गया।
English Commentary
Makaraksha has now lost his technological advantages—his chariot and horses. To be 'Virathah' (chariotless) is a humiliating and vulnerable position. Shri Rama proves that material resources are transient before divine brilliance. Makaraksha standing on the bare ground marks the first definitive stage of his downfall.

मकराक्ष अब अपनी तकनीकी श्रेष्ठता (रथ और अश्व) खो चुका था। 'विरथः' (बिना रथ के) होना उसके लिए एक अपमानजनक और असुरक्षित स्थिति थी। यहाँ श्री राम ने सिद्ध कर दिया कि भौतिक साधन ईश्वर के तेज के सामने क्षणभंगुर हैं। मकराक्ष का भूमि पर खड़ा होना उसके पतन की पहली सीढ़ी थी।
