Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तमुवाच ततो रामो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ।
नैकस्य हेतो रक्षांसि पृथिव्यां हन्तु मर्हसि ॥६-८०-३८॥
tamuvāca tato rāmo lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam |
naikasya heto rakṣāṃsi pṛthivyāṃ hantu marhasi ॥6-80-38॥
Translation
Then Shri Rama said to the auspicious Lakshmana, 'It is not proper for you to kill (all) the Rakshasas on earth for the sake of just one.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब श्री राम ने शुभ लक्षणों वाले लक्ष्मण से कहा—'पृथ्वी पर केवल एक (इन्द्रजीत) के कारण (सभी) राक्षसों का वध करना तुम्हारे लिए उचित नहीं है।'
English Commentary
This verse represents a moral peak in Valmiki Ramayana. Even amidst fierce battle and mortal danger, Shri Rama does not abandon 'Dharma.' He stops Lakshmana and rejects the principle of 'Collective Punishment.' Punishing an entire race or innocents for the crime of one individual is unjust. This restraint is what makes Shri Rama the 'Maryada Purushottama' (The Ideal Man).

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि श्री रामायण के नैतिक शिखर को दर्शाता है। भीषण युद्ध और प्राणघाती संकट के बीच भी, श्री राम 'धर्म' को नहीं त्यागते। वे लक्ष्मण को रोकते हैं और 'सामूहिक दंड' (Collective Punishment) के सिद्धांत को नकारते हैं। एक व्यक्ति के अपराध के लिए पूरी जाति या निर्दोषों को मारना अन्याय है। श्री राम का यह संयम ही उन्हें 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' बनाता है।
