सर्वतो ऽग्निं समास्तीर्य शरपत्रैः सतोमरैः ।
छागस्य कृष्णवर्णस्य गलं जग्राह जीवितः ॥६-८०-८॥
sarvato 'gniṃ samāstīrya śarapatraiḥ satomaraiḥ |
chāgasya kṛṣṇavarṇasya galaṃ jagrāha jīvitaḥ ॥6-80-8॥
Translation
Having spread the weapon-leaves along with lances all around the fire, he caught hold of the neck of a live black goat.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अग्नि के चारों ओर तोमर सहित शस्त्र-रूप कुशों को बिछाकर, उसने एक जीवित काले रंग के बकरे का गला पकड़ लिया।
English Commentary
This marks the beginning of the sacrificial offering. A black goat is considered dear to Tamasic forces. Indrajit seizing the neck of a live animal displays his ruthlessness and singular focus on his goal. The use of 'Tomara' (a type of weapon) in place of Kusha grass again points towards the grim nature of war. This ritual was being performed to appease demonic forces and compel them to assist in the battle.

यह बलि-कर्म का आरम्भ है। काला बकरा तामसिक शक्तियों को प्रिय माना जाता है। इन्द्रजीत द्वारा जीवित पशु का गला पकड़ना उसकी निर्ममता और लक्ष्य के प्रति एकाग्रता को दर्शाता है। यहाँ 'तोमर' (एक प्रकार का शस्त्र) का कुश के स्थान पर प्रयोग पुनः युद्ध की विभीषिका की ओर संकेत करता है। यह अनुष्ठान आसुरी शक्तियों को तुष्ट कर उन्हें युद्ध में सहायता के लिए बाध्य करने हेतु किया जा रहा था।
