शुभे वर्त्मनि तिष्ठन्तं त्वामार्य विजितेन्द्रियम् ।
अनर्थेभ्यो न शक्नोति त्रातुं धर्मो निरर्थकः ॥६-८३-१४॥
śubhe vartmani tiṣṭhantaṃ tvāmārya vijitendriyam |
anarthebhyo na śaknoti trātuṃ dharmo nirarthakaḥ ॥6-83-14॥
Translation
O Noble One! You are always established on the auspicious path and have conquered Your senses; yet this Dharma is unable to protect You from calamities. Therefore, in my view, Dharma is useless.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे आर्य! आप सदा शुभ मार्ग पर चलने वाले और अपनी इन्द्रियों को जीतने वाले हैं; फिर भी यह धर्म आपको संकटों से नहीं बचा सका, इसलिए मेरी दृष्टि में धर्म निरर्थक है।
English Commentary
Shri Lakshmana presents a materialistic or skeptical argument here. His statement is a result of the righteous indignation arising from seeing Shri Rama's suffering. He questions: If Dharma is the protector, why is Shri Rama—the embodiment of Dharma—afflicted so? This verse expresses the human doubt regarding the fruits of righteousness that often surfaces during times of extreme trial.

लक्ष्मण जी यहाँ एक 'नारिश्वाद' (भौतिकवादी या संशयवादी) तर्क दे रहे हैं। उनका यह कथन श्री राम की पीड़ा को देखकर उपजे आक्रोश का परिणाम है। वे प्रश्न उठाते हैं कि यदि धर्म रक्षक है, तो धर्म की साक्षात् मूर्ति श्री राम को इतना कष्ट क्यों मिल रहा है? यह श्लोक धर्म के फल के प्रति मानवीय संशय को प्रकट करता है, जो अक्सर घोर संकट के समय उत्पन्न होता है।
