भूतानां स्थावराणां च जङ्गमानां च दर्शनम् ।
यथा ऽस्ति न तथा धर्मस्तेन नास्तीति मे मतिः ॥६-८३-१५॥
bhūtānāṃ sthāvarāṇāṃ ca jaṅgamānāṃ ca darśanam |
yathā 'sti na tathā dharmastena nāstīti me matiḥ ॥6-83-15॥
Translation
Just as stable and moving beings are visibly seen, Dharma is not perceived in the same way; therefore, it is my opinion that Dharma does not exist.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे चराचर प्राणी प्रत्यक्ष दिखाई देते हैं, वैसा धर्म प्रत्यक्ष दिखाई नहीं देता; इसलिए मेरा मानना है कि धर्म का कोई अस्तित्व ही नहीं है।
English Commentary
Shri Lakshmana relies on empiricism here. He argues that only what is perceptible to the senses (like mountains or animals) can be considered real. Since Dharma is invisible and its protective influence is not currently manifest, he deems it non-existent. This logical extreme is used to jolt Shri Rama out of His idealistic grief and force Him to confront reality.

लक्ष्मण जी प्रत्यक्षवाद का सहारा ले रहे हैं। वे कहते हैं कि जो इंद्रियों से दिखाई दे (जैसे पर्वत, पशु), वही सत्य है। धर्म अदृश्य है और उसका प्रभाव भी वर्तमान में दिखाई नहीं दे रहा, अतः वह शून्य है। यह तर्क श्री राम को झकझोरने के लिए है ताकि वे केवल आदर्शों के शोक में न डूबे रहें बल्कि यथार्थ को स्वीकार करें।
