व्रीडितं शोकसन्तप्तं दृष्ट्वा रामं विभीषणः ।
अन्तर्दुःखेन दीनात्मा किमेतदिति सो ऽब्रवीत् ॥६-८४-५॥
vrīḍitaṃ śokasantaptaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ |
antarduḥkhena dīnātmā kimetaditi so 'bravīt ॥6-84-5॥
Translation
Seeing Shri Rama afflicted with grief and appearing ashamed, Vibhishana's heart also became wretched with internal pain, and he asked, 'What is this?'

शोक से संतप्त और (सेना की इस दशा से) लज्जित श्री राम को देखकर विभीषण का मन भी आंतरिक दुःख से दीन हो गया और वे बोले— 'यह क्या हो रहा है?'
English Commentary
Vibhishana's agitation reflects his exclusive devotion to Shri Rama. The word 'Vriditam' (ashamed/embarrassed) might suggest Shri Rama's own reluctance to appear weak before His army, or it refers to the weight of His perceived failure. Vibhishana's question, 'What is this?' emphasizes the unimaginable nature of the situation. As one who understands the stratagems of Lanka, he is anxious to uncover the actual cause behind this sudden surge of despair.

विभीषण जी की व्याकुलता उनके श्री राम के प्रति अनन्य अनुराग को दर्शाती है। 'व्रीडितम्' (लज्जित) शब्द यहाँ संकेत दे सकता है कि श्री राम को एक योद्धा के रूप में अपनी सेना के सामने इस प्रकार गिरने पर आत्म-संकोच हो रहा था, अथवा यह उनकी विवशता का सूचक है। विभीषण जी का प्रश्न 'किमेतदिति' (यह क्या है?) स्थिति के अकल्पनीय होने को प्रकट करता है। वे लंका के रहस्यों को जानने वाले होने के नाते इस दुःख के पीछे के वास्तविक कारण को खोजने के लिए आतुर हैं।
