विभीषणमुखं दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवं तांश्च वानरान् ।
लक्ष्मणोवाच मन्दार्थमिदं बाष्पपरिप्लुतः ॥६-८४-६॥
vibhīṣaṇamukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā sugrīvaṃ tāṃśca vānarān |
lakṣmaṇovāca mandārthamidaṃ bāṣpaparīplutaḥ ॥6-84-6॥
Translation
Looking at the faces of Vibhishana, Sugriva, and the other monkeys, Lakshmana, His eyes flooded with tears, spoke these words in a low, faint voice.
हिंदी अनुवाद
विभीषण, सुग्रीव और अन्य वानरों के मुख की ओर देखते हुए, आंसुओं से भरे नेत्रों वाले लक्ष्मण जी ने अत्यंत धीमे स्वर में ये वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Shri Lakshmana's condition here is intensely pitiable. His speaking 'Mandartham' (in a low or faint tone) expresses His mental exhaustion and boundless pain. He cannot bear to see His elder brother in such a state. He addresses the leaders of the Vanara host to relate the cause of this catastrophe. This verse marks the beginning of the dialogue that will eventually dispel the greatest misconception of the war—the illusory slaughter of Sita.

श्री लक्ष्मण जी की अवस्था यहाँ अत्यंत दयनीय है। उनका 'मन्दार्थम्' (धीमे या क्षीण स्वर में) बोलना उनकी मानसिक थकान और असीम पीड़ा को व्यक्त करता है। वे अपने बड़े भाई की यह दशा देख नहीं पा रहे हैं। यहाँ वे पूरी वानर सेना के नेतृत्वकर्ताओं के सामने स्थिति का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। यह श्लोक उस सम्वाद की शुरुआत है जो लंका के युद्ध की सबसे बड़ी भ्रांति (माया सीता का वध) को दूर करने वाला है।
