Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न नः क्षमम् वीर्यवता तेन धर्म अनुवर्तिना ।
वैरम् निरर्थकम् कर्तुम् दीयताम् अस्य मैथिली ॥६-९-१६॥
etannimittaṃ vaidehī bhayaṃ naḥ sumahadbhavet । āhṛtā sā parityājyā kalahārthe kṛtena kim ॥6-9-16॥
Translation
'This (act) could be the cause of great danger to us. That Vaidehi who has been abducted must be given up. What is the use of doing something for the sake of strife?'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'यही (सीता हरण) हमारे लिए अत्यंत महान भय का कारण (निमित्त) बन सकता है। वह वैदेही, जो हर कर लाई गई है, उसे त्याग देना (लौटा देना) चाहिए। कलह के लिए किए गए (इस कार्य) से क्या लाभ?'
English Commentary
Vibhishana dissects the morality of the conflict. He justifies Shri Rama's killing of Khara as self-defense ('prana rakshitavya'). He condemns the abduction on ethical ('pap'), social ('ayashasya'), and existential ('anayushya') grounds. His solution is simple and radical: 'Parityajya' (Give her up). He argues that retaining her brings no gain, only 'kalaha' (strife).

विभीषण का धर्म और तर्क। 1. श्री राम ने खर को आत्मरक्षा (Self-defense) में मारा, जो न्यायोचित है। 2. पराई स्त्री का हरण महापाप है जो 'अयशस्य' (बदनामी) और 'अनायुष्य' (मृत्यु) लाता है। 3. निष्कर्ष: सीता को लौटा देना चाहिए। विभीषण साफ कहते हैं कि सीता ही हमारे विनाश ('भय') का कारण बनेगी।
