Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अयुक्तं निधनं कर्तुं पुत्रस्य जनितुर्मम ।
घृणामपास्य रामार्थे निहन्यां भ्रातुरात्मजम् ॥६-९०-१७॥
ayuktaṃ nidhanaṃ kartuṃ putrasya janiturmama |
ghṛṇāmapāsya rāmārthe nihanyāṃ bhrāturātmajam ॥6-90-17॥
Translation
Although it is inappropriate for me to bring about the death of my brother's son, yet for the sake of Shri Rama, I shall cast away compassion and slay my own nephew.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यद्यपि अपने भाई के पुत्र का वध करना मेरे लिए अनुचित है, फिर भी श्री राम के कार्य के लिए मैं दया का त्याग करके अपने इस भतीजे को मार डालूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse provides a poignant depiction of the moral dilemma and the firm resolve within Shri Vibhishana. On one hand is the natural affection for his nephew (Indrajit), and on the other is his absolute devotion to Shri Rama and the duty to protect Dharma. Saying 'having cast away compassion' reflects his mental fortitude—that for the sake of Righteousness, sacrificing personal ties is the highest path. This is the ultimate test and triumph of Vibhishana's character.

यहाँ विभीषण जी के भीतर चल रहे 'धर्म-संकट' और उनके दृढ़ संकल्प का मर्मस्पर्शी चित्रण है। एक ओर भ्रातृ-पुत्र (इन्द्रजित) के प्रति सहज मोह है, और दूसरी ओर श्री राम के प्रति अनन्य भक्ति और धर्म की रक्षा का दायित्व। 'घृणाम् अपास्य' (दया छोड़कर) कहना उनके हृदय की दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है कि धर्म के लिए व्यक्तिगत संबंधों का बलिदान देना ही श्रेष्ठ है। यह विभीषण जी के चरित्र की सबसे बड़ी परीक्षा और उनकी विजय है।
