Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तमसा संवृतं सर्वमासीद्भीमतरं महत् ।
अस्तं गते सहस्रांशौ संवृतं तमसेव हि ॥६-९०-३६॥
tamasā saṃvṛtaṃ sarvamāsīdbhīmataraṃ mahat |
astaṃ gate sahasrāṃśau saṃvṛtaṃ tamaseva hi ॥6-90-36॥
Translation
Everything was covered by the darkness (of arrows) and became exceedingly terrifying; it was exactly as if total darkness had spread upon the setting of the sun.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह सब कुछ बाणों के अंधकार से ढक गया और अत्यंत भयंकर हो गया; वह दृश्य वैसा ही था जैसे सूर्य के अस्त होने पर सब ओर अंधकार छा जाता है।
English Commentary
The analogy of the setting sun ('Sahasranshu') depicts the 'eclipse of light' caused by the arrows. The warriors had transformed day into night through their skill. The term 'Bhimataram' (exceedingly terrifying) reflects the psychological pressure exerted by this artificial darkness on both the Vanaras and the Rakshasas. It was a premonition of cosmic dissolution.

सूर्य (सहस्रांशु) के अस्त होने की उपमा यहाँ बाणों द्वारा किए गए 'अस्त्र-ग्रहण' को दर्शाती है। योद्धाओं ने अपने कौशल से दिन को रात में बदल दिया था। 'भीमतरम्' (अत्यंत भयंकर) शब्द उस मानसिक दबाव को प्रकट करता है जो इस कृत्रिम अंधकार के कारण वानरों और राक्षसों पर पड़ रहा था। यह प्रलय के आने का एक पूर्वाभास था।
