स तं शिरस्युपाघ्राय लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम् ।
लज्जमानं बलात् स्नेहादङ्कमारोप्य वीर्यवान् ॥६-९२-९॥
sa taṃ śirasyupāghrāya lakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmivardhanam |
lajjamānaṃ balāt snehādaṅkamāropya vīryavān ॥6-92-9॥
Translation
Smelling the head of Lakshmana, who increases the glory of his family, the mighty Shri Rama forcefully but affectionately pulled the shy Lakshmana onto his lap.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब वीर्यवान श्रीश्री राम ने शोभा बढ़ाने वाले लक्ष्मण का मस्तक सूंघकर, लजाते हुए उन्हें स्नेहपूर्वक बल से अपनी गोद में बैठा लिया।
English Commentary
This verse depicts a deeply emotional reunion. Smelling the crown of the head ('śirasyupāghrāya') is a traditional Vedic gesture of deep affection and blessing from an elder. Lakshmana is shy ('lajjamānaṃ') to receive such high public praise, viewing his act as humble service. Shri Rama's action of forcefully pulling him onto his lap breaks the barrier of formality, showcasing the intense bond where Shri Rama acts as a father figure to his younger brother. Lakshmana is fittingly called 'lakṣmivardhanam'—the enhancer of prosperity/glory.

यह श्लोक भ्रातृ-प्रेम का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है। 'मस्तक सूंघना' प्राचीन भारतीय संस्कृति में वात्सल्य और आशीर्वाद की उच्चतम अभिव्यक्ति है। लक्ष्मण 'लज्जमानं' (लजा रहे हैं) क्योंकि वे स्वभाव से संकोची हैं और इसे अपना कर्तव्य मात्र मानते हैं। श्रीश्री राम 'बलात्' (बलपूर्वक) उन्हें गोद में बैठाते हैं, जो दर्शाता है कि उनका प्रेम औपचारिकताओं से परे है। यहाँ 'लक्ष्मिवर्धनम्' विशेषण का अर्थ है कि लक्ष्मण रघुकुल की शोभा और यश को बढ़ाने वाले हैं।
