Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्यां तस्यां भयत्रस्ता राक्षसाः संविलिल्यिरे ।
तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं चराचरचिखादिषुम् ॥६-९३-२६॥
tasyāṃ tasyāṃ bhayatrastā rākṣasāḥ saṃvililyire |
tamantakamiva kruddhaṃ carācaracikhādiṣum ॥6-93-26॥
Translation
...in that direction, the Rakshasas hid themselves, struck with fear. He looked like the angry Antaka (Death) wishing to devour all moving and non-moving beings.
हिंदी अनुवाद
...उस-उस दिशा में भय से त्रस्त होकर राक्षस छिप गए। वह चराचर (जड़-चेतन) को खाने की इच्छा रखने वाले क्रुद्ध यमराज (अंतक) के समान लग रहा था।
English Commentary
The terror is internal; his own subjects flee from his gaze. He appears indiscriminate in his hunger for destruction, like Death ('Antaka') wanting to consume the whole world ('carācara'). This isolation of Ravana—feared even by his own—highlights his descent into madness.
हिंदी टीका
रावण के अपने ही लोग (राक्षस) उससे डरकर छिप रहे हैं ('संविलिल्यिरे')। उन्हें लग रहा है कि रावण भेद नहीं कर पाएगा और सबको खा जाएगा ('चिखादिषुम्')। एक राजा जब रक्षक के बजाय भक्षक जैसा दिखने लगे, तो यह उसके पतन का संकेत है।
