Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भ्रमन्तीं काञ्चनीं कोटिं कार्मुकस्य महात्मनः ।
अलातचक्रप्रतिमां ददृशुस्ते न राघवम् ॥६-९४-२८॥
bhramantīṃ kāñcanīṃ koṭiṃ kārmukasya mahātmanaḥ |
alātacakrapratimāṃ dadṛśuste na rāghavam ॥6-94-28॥
Translation
They saw the golden tip of the great-souled Shri Rama's bow whirling like a circle of fire (firebrand), but they did not see Raghava himself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्हें महात्मा श्री राम के धनुष की स्वर्णमयी कोटि (किनारा) अलात-चक्र (घूमती हुई आग की मसाल) के समान घूमती हुई दिखाई दी, किंतु वे राघव को नहीं देख सके।
English Commentary
The visual phenomenon described here is 'alata-chakra'—the illusion of a continuous circle of fire created by whirling a burning stick. Shri Rama's bow movement was so rapid that the golden tips formed a blur of light. The instrument of death (the bow) was visible in its terrifying motion, but the wielder remained elusive.
हिंदी टीका
श्री राम के बाण चलाने की गति इतनी तीव्र थी कि धनुष का हिलना एक निरंतर चक्र (circle) जैसा दिख रहा था, जैसे जलती हुई लकड़ी को तेजी से घुमाने पर आग का गोला बनता है (अलात-चक्र)। धनुष की 'स्वर्णमयी कोटि' चमक रही थी, पर उस धनुष को धारण करने वाला वीर योद्धा गति के कारण अदृश्य था।
