विभीषणवचः कुर्याद्यदि स्म धनदानुजः ।
श्मशानभूता दुःखार्ता नेयं लङ्का पुरी भवेत् ॥६-९५-२२॥
vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ kuryādyadi sma dhanadānujaḥ |
śmaśānabhūtā duḥkhārtā neyaṃ laṅkā purī bhavet ॥6-95-22॥
Translation
Had the younger brother of Kubera (Ravana) followed Vibhishana's advice, this city of Lanka would not have turned into a sorrowful cremation ground.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि कुबेर के अनुज (रावण) ने विभीषण की बात मान ली होती, तो यह लंकापुरी आज दुःख से भरी हुई श्मशान भूमि न बनी होती।
English Commentary
Calling Ravana the 'brother of Kubera' recalls his noble lineage and potential, which have now been squandered. The word 'Shmashanabhuta' (become a crematorium) is a stark and gruesome depiction of Lanka's current state. The women now clearly see the contrast between Ravana's stubbornness and Vibhishana's foresight. It is a moment of deep regret when all is already lost.

रावण को 'धनदानुजः' (कुबेर का भाई) कहना उसके उच्च कुल और सामर्थ्य की याद दिलाता है, जो अब व्यर्थ हो चुका है। 'श्मशानभूता' (श्मशान बनी हुई) शब्द लंका की वर्तमान स्थिति का अत्यंत वीभत्स और सत्य चित्रण है। राक्षसियाँ रावण के हठ और विभीषण की दूरदर्शिता के अंतर को अब स्पष्ट रूप से देख पा रही हैं। यह पश्चाताप की वह घड़ी है जब सब कुछ हाथ से निकल चुका है।
