Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावणस्याभयं दत्तं मानुषेभ्यो न याचितम् ।
तदिदं मानुषं मन्ये प्राप्तं निस्संशयं भयम् ॥६-९५-३२॥
rāvaṇasyābhayaṃ dattaṃ mānuṣebhyo na yācitam |
tadidaṃ mānuṣaṃ manye prāptaṃ nissaṃśayaṃ bhayam ॥6-95-32॥
Translation
Protection was granted to Ravana (by Brahma), but he did not ask for safety from humans. Therefore, I believe this terrible fear has undoubtedly arrived from the human side.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण को (ब्रह्मा जी ने) अभयदान तो दिया था, किन्तु उसने मनुष्यों से रक्षा की याचना नहीं की थी। इसलिए मैं मानती हूँ कि यह भयंकर भय निश्चित रूप से मनुष्यों की ओर से ही आया है।
English Commentary
This describes the 'loophole' in Ravana's boon that necessitated Shri Rama's human incarnation. In his arrogance, Ravana had dismissed humans as insignificant. The Rakshasa women now recognize this historic oversight. 'Manusham Bhayam' (fear from a human) was the ultimate failure of a demon who had conquered Gods but failed to grasp the latent power within a human being.

यह रावण के वरदान की वह 'चूक' (Loophole) है जिसके कारण श्री राम को मानव रूप धारण करना पड़ा। रावण ने अपनी अहमन्यता में मनुष्यों को अत्यंत तुच्छ समझा था। राक्षसियाँ अब उस ऐतिहासिक भूल को पहचान रही हैं। 'मानुषं भयम्' (मनुष्य से भय) उस असुर की सबसे बड़ी विफलता थी जिसने देवताओं को तो जीता, किन्तु एक मानव की शक्ति को नहीं समझ सका।
