दवाग्निवेष्टितानां हि करेणूनां यथा वने ।
प्राप्तकालं कृतं तेन पौलस्त्येन महात्मना ॥ ६.९५.42 ॥ यत एव भयं दृष्टं तमेव शरणं गतः ॥ ॥६-९५-४२॥
davāgniveṣṭitānāṃ hi kareṇūnāṃ yathā vane |
prāptakālaṃ kṛtaṃ tena paulastyena mahātmanā |

Translation
Our condition is like that of female elephants surrounded by a forest fire. That high-souled Vibhishana did what was appropriate for the time; he sought refuge with the very person (Shri Rama) from whom the danger arose.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे वन में दावानल (जंगल की आग) से घिरी हथिनियाँ व्याकुल होती हैं, वैसी ही हमारी दशा है। उन महात्मा विभीषण ने ही समय के अनुकूल उचित कार्य किया; जिससे भय था, वे उसी (श्री राम) की शरण में चले गए।
English Commentary
The forest fire analogy refers to both the physical arson of Lanka and the spiritual brilliance of Shri Rama. The Rakshasa women now appreciate Vibhishana's decision. Using 'Mahatmana' shows their newfound respect for him. They acknowledge that he was the wisest to turn the source of danger (Shri Rama) into his own protector. This is an endorsement of the glory of Sharanagati (surrender), voiced by the enemies themselves.

दावानल की उपमा वानरों द्वारा लगाई गई लंका की अग्नि और श्री राम के तेज दोनों को सूचित करती है। राक्षसियाँ अब विभीषण जी के निर्णय की सराहना कर रही हैं। 'महात्मना' शब्द विभीषण जी के प्रति उनके सम्मान को दर्शाता है। वे मानती हैं कि विभीषण जी ने सबसे बुद्धिमानी का काम किया कि वे विनाश के स्रोत (श्री राम) को ही अपना रक्षक बना लिया। यह शरणागति की महिमा का राक्षसों के मुख से हुआ गान है।
