कथं शूर्पणखा वृद्धा कराला निर्णतोदरी ।
आससाद वने रामं कन्दर्पमिव रूपिणम् ॥६-९५-६॥
kathaṃ śūrpaṇakhā vṛddhā karālā nirṇatodarī |
āsasāda vane rāmaṃ kandarpamiva rūpiṇam ॥6-95-6॥
Translation
They asked: 'How did that old, hideous, and pot-bellied Shurpanakha approach Shri Rama, who is as handsome as Cupid personified, in the forest?'

वे कहने लगीं कि वह बूढ़ी, डरावनी और लटके हुए पेट वाली शूर्पणखा वन में साक्षात् कामदेव के समान रूपवान श्री राम के पास क्यों गई?
English Commentary
The Rakshasa women are searching for the root cause of this disaster and place the blame on Shurpanakha. The stark contrast between her hideous form and the divine beauty of Shri Rama ('like Kandarpa') illustrates that unbridled lust and unrighteousness paved the way for this destruction. They believe that had she not cast an evil eye on Shri Rama, Lanka would not be facing this ruin.

राक्षसियाँ अब इस सम्पूर्ण अनर्थ की जड़ को खोज रही हैं। वे शूर्पणखा को दोषी ठहराती हैं। यहाँ शूर्पणखा के कुरूप स्वरूप और श्री राम के दिव्य सौंदर्य (कन्दर्प इव) के बीच का विरोधाभास यह दर्शाता है कि अधर्म और वासना ने ही इस विनाश का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया था। वे मानती हैं कि यदि शूर्पणखा ने श्री राम पर कुदृष्टि न डाली होती, तो आज लंका का यह हाल न होता।
