जनस्यास्याल्पभाग्यत्वाद्वलिनी श्वेतमूर्धजा ।
अकार्यमपहास्यं च सर्वलोकविगर्हितम् ॥६-९५-९॥
janasyāsyālpabhāgyatvādvalinī śvetamūrdhajā |
akāryamapahāsyaṃ ca sarvalokavigarhitam ॥6-95-9॥
Translation
Due to the ill-fate of our people, that wrinkled and white-haired Shurpanakha performed that reprehensible, laughable, and universally condemned act.

हम लोगों के मंद भाग्य के कारण ही, उन सफेद बालों वाली और झुर्रियों वाली शूर्पणखा ने वह निन्दनीय, उपहास योग्य और सम्पूर्ण लोक द्वारा बुरा माना जाने वाला कार्य किया।
English Commentary
The Rakshasa women curse their own ill-fate ('Alpabhagyatva'). They attack Shurpanakha's old age and her inappropriate lustful advances. Words like 'Akaryam' (forbidden act) and 'Sarvalokavigarhitam' (universally condemned) emphasize the gravity of the sin that sparked the war. This collective lament shows that the common residents of Lanka were exhausted by the reckless actions of Ravana's family.

राक्षसियाँ अपने दुर्भाग्य (अल्प-भाग्यत्व) को कोस रही हैं। वे शूर्पणखा की वृद्धावस्था और उसके अनुचित काम-भाव पर प्रहार करती हैं। 'अकार्यम्' (जो नहीं करना चाहिए था) और 'सर्वलोकविगर्हितम्' (जगत द्वारा त्यागने योग्य) शब्द उस पाप की गम्भीरता को बताते हैं जिसने युद्ध की चिंगारी जलाई। यह सामूहिक विलाप दर्शाता है कि लंका की आम जनता अब रावण के परिवार के कृत्यों से त्रस्त हो चुकी थी।
