ततो युद्धाय तेजस्वी रक्षोगणबलैर्वृतः ।
निर्ययावुद्यतधनुः कालान्तकयमोपमः ॥६-९६-३८॥
tato yuddhāya tejasvī rakṣogaṇabalairvṛtaḥ |
niryayāvudyatadhanuḥ kālāntakayamopamaḥ ॥6-96-38॥
Translation
Then the radiant Ravana, surrounded by the Rakshasa forces and with bow raised, marched out for battle like the God of Death at the end of time.

तब राक्षस सेनाओं से घिरे हुए, हाथ में धनुष लिए तेजस्वी रावण युद्ध के लिए निकला, जो प्रलयकाल के यमराज के समान लग रहा था।
English Commentary
Likening Ravana to the 'God of Death at the end of an eon' is the pinnacle of describing his destructive form. Carrying an 'uplifted bow' shows he is ready for immediate assault. Although described as radiant ('Tejasvi'), this brilliance was a portent of ruin. He was about to appear before the Vanara host as Death personified.

रावण को 'कालान्तकयम' (प्रलय के यमराज) की उपमा देना उसके संहारक स्वरूप की पराकाष्ठा है। 'उद्यतधनुः' होना यह बताता है कि वह अब सीधे प्रहार के लिए तैयार है। यद्यपि वह तेजस्वी (तेजस्वी) लग रहा था, किन्तु वह तेज विनाश का सूचक था। यहाँ वह साक्षात् मृत्यु बनकर वानर सेना के सम्मुख उपस्थित होने वाला था।
