Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेषां तु तुमुलं युद्धं बभूव कपिरक्षसाम् ।
अन्योन्यमाह्वयानानां क्रुद्धानां जयमिच्छताम् ॥६-९६-४७॥
teṣāṃ tu tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ babhūva kapirakṣasām |
anyonyamāhvayānānāṃ kruddhānāṃ jayamicchatām ॥6-96-47॥
Translation
A very tumultuous battle took place between those monkeys and Rakshasas, who were challenging each other, filled with rage and desiring victory.
हिंदी अनुवाद
एक-दूसरे को ललकारते हुए, अत्यंत क्रोधित और विजय की इच्छा रखने वाले उन वानरों और राक्षसों के बीच अत्यंत तुमुल (भयंकर) युद्ध हुआ।
English Commentary
The 'tumultuousness' of the battle reflects the blend of uproar and carnage. 'Challenging each other' indicates that the fight had become a matter of individual honor. Both sides fought with a 'desire for victory,' but on one side was the invincible resolve of Dharma, and on the other, the final throes of unrighteousness.

युद्ध की 'तुमुलता' यहाँ कोलाहल और संहार के मिश्रण को दर्शाती है। 'अन्योन्यम् आह्वयानानाम्' (एक-दूसरे को ललकारना) यह बताता है कि यह युद्ध अब व्यक्तिगत प्रतिष्ठा का विषय बन गया था। दोनों पक्ष 'जयमिच्छताम्' (जीत की इच्छा) के साथ लड़ रहे थे, किन्तु एक ओर धर्म का अजेय संकल्प था और दूसरी ओर अधर्म की अंतिम छटपटाहट।
