विरूपाक्षः स्वकं नाम धन्वी विश्राव्य राक्षसः ।
रथादाप्लुत्य दुर्धर्षो गजस्कन्धमुपारुहत् ॥६-९७-१४॥
virūpākṣaḥ svakaṃ nāma dhanvī viśrāvya rākṣasaḥ |
rathādāplutya durdharṣo gajaskandhamupāruhat ॥6-97-14॥
Translation
...the archer and unconquerable Rakshasa Virupaksha, announcing his own name, jumped down from his chariot and mounted the shoulders of an elephant.

...तब धनुर्धर एवं दुर्धर्ष राक्षस विरूपाक्ष ने अपना नाम सुनाकर (ललकारते हुए), रथ से कूदकर हाथी के कंधे पर आरोहण किया।
English Commentary
Virupaksha follows the warrior code by announcing his identity before engaging. Interestingly, he switches from a chariot to an elephant ('gajaskandham'). This tactical shift suggests he wanted a more stable and elevated platform to fight the tree-wielding Sugriva, or perhaps to match Sugriva's brute strength with the elephant's power.

विरूपाक्ष एक प्रमुख राक्षस सेनापति है। 'नाम सुनाकर' (स्वकं नाम श्राव्य) युद्ध करना वीरों की मर्यादा है। उसने रथ छोड़कर हाथी को चुना क्योंकि भीड़-भाड़ वाले युद्ध में और सुग्रीव जैसे बलशाली शत्रु के विरुद्ध ऊंचाई और हाथी का बल अधिक उपयोगी हो सकता था।
