ते ऽर्दिता निशितैर्बाणैः क्रोशन्तो विप्रदुद्रुवुः ।
पावकार्चिस्समाविष्टा दह्यमाना यथा गजाः ॥६-९७-३॥
te 'rditā niśitairbāṇaiḥ krośanto vipradudruvuḥ |
pāvakārcissamāviṣṭā dahyamānā yathā gajāḥ ॥6-97-3॥
Translation
Tormented by sharp arrows, they fled screaming, just like elephants surrounded and scorched by the flames of a fire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तीखे बाणों से पीड़ित होकर वे (वानर) वैसे ही चीखते हुए भागने लगे, जैसे आग की लपटों से घिरे हुए और जलते हुए हाथी भागते हैं।
English Commentary
Another vivid simile compares the fleeing Vanaras to elephants trapped in a fire ('pāvakārcis'). Elephants represent strength, yet even they panic when scorched. This suggests that despite the Vanaras' immense physical strength, Ravana's supernatural weaponry created a panic akin to a forest fire, breaking their formation and morale.

यहाँ एक और उपमा है—'जलते हुए हाथी'। हाथियों का बल प्रसिद्ध है, लेकिन अग्नि के सामने वे भी विवश हो जाते हैं। वानर भी महाबली थे, किन्तु रावण के बाणों की पीड़ा ने उन्हें असहाय कर दिया। 'क्रोशन्तो' (चिल्लाते हुए) शब्द रणभूमि में व्याप्त भय और कोलाहल को दर्शाता है।
