हन्यमाने बले तूर्णमन्योन्यं ते महामृधे ।
सरसीव महाघर्मे सोपक्षीणे बभूवतुः ॥६-९८-१॥
hanyamāne bale tūrṇamanyonyaṃ te mahāmṛdhe |
sarasīva mahāgharme sopakṣīṇe babhūvatuḥ ॥6-98-1॥
Translation
As the armies were swiftly being destroyed by each other in that great battle, they both became like two lakes drying up during intense heat.

उस महायुद्ध में एक-दूसरे के द्वारा शीघ्रता से सेनाओं का संहार किए जाने पर, वे दोनों सेनाएं भीषण गर्मी में सूखते हुए दो तालाबों के समान हो गईं।
English Commentary
Maharishi Valmiki uses a precise simile here. Just as the intense heat of summer evaporates the water of lakes, the ferocity of the battle was depleting the armies on both sides. This verse illustrates the destructive nature of war, where attrition is rapid and inevitable. The term 'mahamridhe' indicates both the scale and the cruelty of the conflict.

महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक अत्यंत सटीक उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे ग्रीष्म ऋतु का प्रचंड ताप जलाशयों के जल को वाष्पित कर देता है, वैसे ही युद्ध की भीषणता दोनों पक्षों की सेनाओं को क्षीण कर रही थी। यह श्लोक युद्ध के विनाशकारी प्रभाव को दर्शाता है जहाँ विजय का अर्थ केवल 'कम हानि' रह जाता है। 'महामृधे' शब्द युद्ध की विशालता और क्रूरता दोनों को इंगित करता है।
